Waterless diffuser buying checklist: 10 points to check before you pay

Los mejores difusores sin agua de 2025: por qué BENDIS marca la diferencia - BENDIS

Short answer: before buying a waterless diffuser, check ten points: real coverage, noise in dB, scheduling, tank size, refill format, compatible fragrances, warranty, spare parts, cost per refill and after sales service. If a product page doesn't answer one of them, ask before you pay. Below you will find each point explained and how we handle it at BENDIS.

We sell nebulisers, so read this with that in mind. That is why the criteria come first and our answer second, without embellishment.

Before the list: make sure it is real nebulisation

Some devices are sold as «waterless» but work by evaporation from a pad or with heat. They don't give the same result. A nebuliser uses air to break the fragrance into very fine particles, with no water and no heat. If the product page doesn't explain how it diffuses, be wary. If you are still deciding between a nebuliser and an ultrasonic diffuser, read the comparison for home or the comparison for business.

Buying checklist: 10 points to check

1. Real coverage

What to look for: the m² on a product page assume good conditions. Real coverage drops with high ceilings, doors open to the street, strong ventilation or separate rooms. Look for the m³ too and go slightly bigger.

At BENDIS: each product page gives m² and m³, for example LUME 100 m² (250 m³) or ORBIT about 600 m² (1,500 m³). To size yours, use the table for homes or the one for business premises.

2. Noise

What to look for: a nebuliser has a pump. Ask for the figure in dB, not adjectives like «silent».

At BENDIS: SENSE runs at 30 dB or less, LUME at 38 dB or less, ORBIT and HALO at 40 dB or less, and ATMOS and WAVE at 45 dB or less. For bedrooms and treatment rooms, see diffusers and noise.

3. Scheduling

What to look for: that you can set days, time slots and intensity, not just switch it on and off.

At BENDIS: AURA 5, SENSE, LUME, FLOW, ORBIT, ATMOS, HALO, WAVE and NOVA are scheduled from the BENDIS app. AURA 5 has 5 intensity levels and 6 time slots, and PULSE, LUME and ORBIT have a radar presence sensor. How to set it up: scheduling your diffuser from the app.

4. Tank

What to look for: a small tank in a large space means refilling very often. Check the capacity and whether it warns you when it is running low.

At BENDIS: PULSE 50 ml, SENSE 60 ml, LUME 200 ml, FLOW 500 ml, ORBIT 800 ml, ATMOS and HALO 1,000 ml and NOVA 1,500 ml. LUME, ORBIT and WAVE warn you about the fragrance level.

5. Refill format

What to look for: whether it uses sealed single brand cartridges or is refilled from a bottle, and in which sizes refills are sold.

At BENDIS: fragrances and neutralisers are sold in 150 ml and 250 ml refills. ROAM, the car model, uses 5 ml bottles.

6. Fragrance compatibility

What to look for: which liquids it accepts. Cold nebulisation needs a specific viscosity: thick oils clog the nozzle, and water doesn't work either.

At BENDIS: our fragrances are perfumery products formulated for cold nebulisation, and there are neutralisers for when you first need to remove a bad smell. They are not diluted in water. What you can and can't load is in waterless diffuser: safety and maintenance.

7. Warranty

What to look for: how long it lasts and what it covers. If you buy as a consumer in Spain, a new product has a three year legal guarantee. Also ask how claims are handled.

At BENDIS: purchases are covered by the legal guarantee. With the scenting subscription, if the device fails, it is replaced.

8. Spare parts

What to look for: whether parts such as the bottle, the power adapter or the head are available, or whether a small fault forces you to buy a new device.

At BENDIS: ask us about the specific model before buying. Each device has a PDF manual in manuals and tutorials, useful to see how it comes apart and how to clean it.

9. Cost per refill

What to look for: a cheap device with expensive refills works out expensive over a year. Ask for the refill price and how long it lasts with your usage.

At BENDIS: 150 ml at €24.99 and 250 ml at €29.99 in the NATURAL line; 150 ml at €29.99 and 250 ml at €34.99 for the numbered fragrances and neutralisers. A 250 ml refill lasts around 1 month with the device running 24 hours at high intensity, about 2 months with normal home use and 3 to 4 months on a gentle setting a few hours a day. The 12 month figures are in what it costs to scent a business for a year.

10. Service

What to look for: whether there is a phone line with real people, tutorials, help choosing and the option to try the scent first.

At BENDIS: we answer on +34 911 09 70 50 Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 20:00, there are videos and manuals for each model, and we send 5 ml samples so you can try the scent in your own space. For businesses, the scenting subscription ranges from €29.90 to €94.90 + VAT per month depending on the device, with device and fragrance included, no minimum term (30 days' notice) and only in Spain and Portugal.

And a question to ask first: missing scent or bad smell?

If there is a source of bad smell (pets, damp, kitchen, toilets), no diffuser will fix it: the fragrance mixes with the smell and comes across worse. First you need to neutralise and then add scent. To see the full range, visit diffusers, or businesses if it is for your premises.

Frequently asked questions

What matters most when buying a waterless diffuser?

That its coverage suits your real space and that it accepts fragrances that won't clog the nozzle. After that, noise and scheduling depending on where you will use it.

How many dB are acceptable for a bedroom?

The fewer the better. Look for devices that state the figure in dB and schedule it so it doesn't run while you sleep. BENDIS SENSE runs at 30 dB or less.

Is it better to buy or take out a subscription?

For home, buying is the usual choice. For a business, the subscription avoids investing in the device and includes fragrance and replacement if it fails. We compare the figures in the 12 month cost.

Can I try the scent before buying?

Yes. We send 5 ml samples, because the same fragrance smells different in the bottle than when it is diffused in your space.

What should I do if the diffuser stops giving off scent?

Check the tank, whether the nozzle needs cleaning and the schedule. All the causes are in my diffuser isn't giving off scent.
