One of the most frequently asked questions when a business wants to scent its space: what is the difference between a professional nebulizer and an ultrasonic diffuser? We explain it simply so you can choose well.
The key technical difference: how they disperse aroma
Although both serve to scent a space, they work with very different technologies:
- Ultrasonic diffuser: mixes water and essential oil, and through high-frequency vibrations generates a visible cool mist. The mist evaporates the aroma into the environment.
- Professional nebulizer (cold air diffusion): does NOT use water or heat. It directly atomizes pure oil into microscopic particles (5-10 microns) that remain suspended in the air for hours.
This technical difference has enormous consequences for the result.
Practical comparison: ultrasonic diffuser vs. nebulizer
Space coverage
- Ultrasonic diffuser: up to 30-40 m². It loses strength very quickly due to water dilution.
- Professional nebulizer: from 50 m² to 1,000 m² depending on the model. The fine particles spread throughout the space.
Aroma intensity and permanence
- Ultrasonic diffuser: soft aroma that lasts between 1 and 3 hours. Water dilutes the concentration.
- Professional nebulizer: pure and long-lasting aroma. The microparticles keep the scent active for 8-12 hours.
Perceived aroma quality
- Ultrasonic diffuser: some oils change their nuance when mixed with water. The aroma may be perceived as "watered down."
- Professional nebulizer: the aroma is perceived the same as in perfumery. This is the technology used by luxury hotels and premium brands.
Maintenance
- Ultrasonic diffuser: requires frequent cleaning of the water tank. Risk of bacteria and mold if not maintained.
- Professional nebulizer: as it does not use water, there is no bacterial risk. Just change the cartridge when it runs out.
Oil compatibility
- Ultrasonic diffuser: only essential or synthetic oils designed for mixing with water. Not all professional aromas are compatible.
- Professional nebulizer: compatible with pure professional aromas and high-end compounds.
Medium-term cost
- Ultrasonic diffuser: cheaper equipment (40-100 €) but low performance. In businesses, several are usually required, and oils are used up quickly.
- Professional nebulizer: higher initial investment equipment, but with an included subscription, it is more profitable: only 1 unit covers the entire space for years.
When to choose an ultrasonic diffuser
The ultrasonic diffuser is designed for domestic use:
- Individual rooms or small living rooms.
- Sporadic use (a short while each night).
- Personal aromatherapy with pure essential oils.
- When the visual effect of the mist is more important than the aroma's strength.
When to choose a professional nebulizer
The nebulizer is the professional option for any commercial space:
- Hotels, restaurants, offices, shops, gyms, clinics.
- Spaces larger than 50 m².
- Continuous use for many hours a day.
- When a consistent brand aroma is sought, without variations in intensity.
- When it is desired to connect to the building's HVAC climate control system.

Frequently asked questions
Does the nebulizer make noise?
Much less than an ultrasonic diffuser (which vibrates constantly). Ours operate below 35 dB: imperceptible in high-traffic areas.
Does it require special electrical installation?
No. It works plugged into a standard outlet. Only models connected to HVAC require technical intervention by the building installer.
Can I use my own essential oils in a nebulizer?
It is not recommended. Pure essential oils tend to be viscous and clog the system. BENDIS professional aromas are specifically formulated for nebulization.
How much does a professional nebulizer consume?
Very little: between 5 and 15 W depending on the model. Monthly electricity consumption is practically negligible (less than €1 per month).
