Short answer: for the home there are five types of aroma diffuser: reed diffuser, candle, plug-in air freshener, ultrasonic diffuser with water and waterless nebulizer. Reeds and candles work for small corners and occasional use. An ultrasonic diffuser is fine in a bedroom. If you want the whole living room or flat to smell good every day, the one that works is the nebulizer.
At home you are not looking for the same thing as in a business. Noise matters, so does how much attention the device needs and whether the scent becomes tiring. Here are the types you will find in shops, what each one does well and which room it suits. If you are fitting out commercial premises, read our guide on which diffuser to choose for a business.
Types of aroma diffuser for the home: comparison table
| Type | How it works | Pros | Cons | Room |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reed diffuser | The reeds soak up the liquid and it evaporates on its own | No plug, decorative, cheap to start | Very short reach, no control, loses strength over the days | Hallway, bedside table, small bathroom |
| Scented candle | The flame melts the wax and releases the scent | Warm atmosphere, for a specific moment | Cannot be left unattended, short reach, lasts as long as the candle | A while in the living room or bathroom, always supervised |
| Plug-in air freshener | A heating element warms a refill | Cheap, discreet, nothing to do | Heat changes how the scent is perceived, little control, refill runs out quickly | Corridor, toilet, small room |
| Ultrasonic with water | Vibrates to create a water mist with a few drops of oil or fragrance | Affordable, decorative light, quiet | Diluted scent, adds humidity, tank must be emptied and cleaned, falls short in large rooms | Bedroom, small study |
| Waterless nebulizer | Pressurised air breaks the fragrance into a very fine, dry mist | Undiluted scent, programmable, does not wet surfaces, covers anything from a toilet to a large living room | Costs more upfront than a reed diffuser or a basic ultrasonic | Living room, open plan, whole flat, bathrooms |
Reeds and candles: pretty, but for corners
A reed diffuser is decoration that smells. It works within a couple of steps and almost disappears with the window open. It has no schedule and no intensity setting: it smells the same at three in the afternoon as in the middle of the night, until it dries out.
A candle is a moment, not a system. Lighting one for dinner or a bath is fine. Leaving it lit so the house smells nice while you are out is not an option. We explain this in more detail in reeds, candles and sprays: why they do not really work.
Plug-in air freshener: convenient, with limits
You plug it in and forget about it. That is its strength. The problem is that it works with heat: the scent changes as the refill warms up and gets used, and the intensity can barely be adjusted. It is fine for a corridor or a toilet if you do not expect much.
Ultrasonic diffuser: the best seller
This is the typical device with a water tank and coloured lights. You mix water with a few drops and a visible mist comes out. For a bedroom it is a reasonable option and it is usually quiet.
At home it has three drawbacks. The scent comes out very diluted, so you barely notice it in a living room. It adds humidity, which is not a good idea in homes that already tend to be damp. And the water tank needs emptying and cleaning often. You can find the in-depth comparison with the nebulizer in nebulizer vs oil diffuser for the home.
Waterless nebulizer: the one that scents the whole house
No water and no heat. A pump pushes pressurised air and breaks the fragrance into a fine, dry particle that spreads through the room without wetting surfaces. You programme it by time and intensity, so the living room can smell good when you get home and the device can rest at night.
The BENDIS home range has a model for each size: PULSE (7 m²) for bathrooms and walk-in wardrobes, SENSE (80 m²) for bedrooms and studies because it is the quietest, LUME (100 m²) and FLOW (120 m²) for living and dining rooms or open-plan flats, and AURA 5 (60 m²) if you want five scents loaded at once. For the car, ROAM (4 m²) is ultrasonic and portable. You will find them all in the home collection.
If you are concerned about cleaning or the safety of having a device on for many hours, we explain it in waterless diffuser: safety and maintenance.
Which diffuser to choose for each room
- Bathroom or toilet. Neutralise first, then scent. A PULSE with a neutralising refill covers up to 7 m² and switches on with a presence sensor.
- Bedroom. It should not be heard. An ultrasonic works for a while; for daily use, a SENSE, which runs at 30 dB or less.
- Living room or living and dining room. Reeds, candles and plug-ins fall short here. A nebulizer sized to the room: LUME or FLOW.
- Whole flat. Scent does not go through closed doors. One device in the main area and a small one in each bathroom works better than a big one in a corner.
- Car. ROAM, ultrasonic with a battery.
To get the right model for the size of each room, use the table in what size of diffuser you need for the square metres of your home. And if you are comparing brands, go through the checklist before buying a waterless diffuser.
What no diffuser can fix
If your home has a background odour (damp, tobacco, pets), putting perfume on top does not cover it. The two mix and the result is worse. Neutralise first, then scent. Here is how: odour neutralisation.
How much it costs to run a nebulizer at home
BENDIS fragrances are perfumery fragrances formulated for cold nebulisation, and they are not diluted in water. The 150 ml refill costs €24.99 in the NATURAL line and €29.99 for the numbered fragrances; the 250 ml refill, €29.99 and €34.99. A 250 ml bottle lasts about 2 months with normal home use and 3 to 4 months if you run it gently for a few hours a day. The device should be cleaned every 3 months. See all the scents in fragrances.
Frequently asked questions
Which type of aroma diffuser is best for the home?
It depends on the room. For a corner or a short while, a reed diffuser or a candle. For a bedroom, an ultrasonic or a quiet nebulizer. For the living room or the whole flat with daily use, a waterless nebulizer, because it is the only one that covers that area with a scent you can actually notice.
Does an ultrasonic diffuser make the house damp?
Yes, because it works with water. In winter with the heating on you may not notice, but in homes that tend to be damp it does not help. A nebulizer uses no water and adds no humidity.
Can I use essential oils in a BENDIS nebulizer?
It is not recommended. The devices are designed for fragrances formulated for nebulisation. Essential oils are thicker and can clog the nozzle.
Can one diffuser cover the whole flat?
Only if the flat is open plan. With separate rooms and doors, each closed area needs its own diffusion point. The usual setup is one in the living area and a small one in each bathroom.
Is a nebulizer noisy?
A little, because it has a small air pump. For bedrooms the best choice is SENSE, which runs at 30 dB or less. More detail in diffusers and noise in bedrooms.
