Short answer: at home, an ultrasonic oil diffuser suits a bedroom or a small room if you like the visible mist and don't mind refilling water and cleaning the tank. For the living room, the hallway or several rooms, a waterless nebuliser is better: it doesn't leave moisture, it can be scheduled and it needs very little maintenance. With children or pets, in both cases, keep the intensity low and ventilate well.
Nebuliser and oil diffuser: the difference in two lines
- Ultrasonic oil diffuser: you fill a tank with water, add a few drops of essential oil or fragrance, and a vibrating membrane creates a cool mist you can see.
- Waterless nebuliser: no water and no heat. A stream of air breaks the undiluted fragrance into very fine particles that spread through the room. If you want the technical side, read how a nebuliser works inside.
Almost every difference you will notice at home comes from this: noise, moisture, how strong the scent is and how much work it takes.
Noise: which diffuser for the bedroom
The ultrasonic diffuser is very quiet. It has no pump, so at most you hear a soft bubbling. That is why many people keep one on the bedside table.
A nebuliser has a small pump and you can hear it slightly with each pulse. In a living room with the TV on you won't notice it. In a bedroom it pays to choose carefully: BENDIS SENSE runs at 30 dB or less, the quietest in our range, and BENDIS LUME at 38 dB or less. Even so, the most comfortable option is to schedule it to run for a while before bed and switch off while you sleep. More ideas in diffusers and noise in the bedroom.
Maintenance: water every day or cleaning every 3 months
Ultrasonic. You need to refill water often, empty what is left and clean the tank and membrane regularly. If water sits for a long time or is very hard, residue builds up and the device performs worse. We explain it in moisture, mould and maintenance.
Nebuliser. You only load the fragrance and clean it every 3 months, and whenever you change scent, with isopropyl alcohol and never with water. A 250 ml refill lasts about 2 months with normal home use, and 3 to 4 months if you run it gently for a few hours a day. It depends on intensity, schedule and room size. Step by step cleaning and what you can load are in waterless diffuser: safety and maintenance.
Moisture at home: when it helps and when it doesn't
An ultrasonic diffuser adds some moisture to the air. In winter, with the heating on, that can feel pleasant in a small room. In a home that already tends to be damp, inside a wardrobe, near books or next to electronics, it works against you.
A nebuliser doesn't leave moisture or a film on furniture or fabrics. If your home has damp problems, it is the logical choice. And if what you notice is a smell of damp, tobacco or pets, you need to neutralise it first and then add scent: see odour neutralisation.
Diffusers with children and pets: precautions
No diffuser is a toy, and neither is concentrated fragrance. With small children or animals at home, follow these guidelines with any device:
- Place it high and stable, out of their reach. Keep refills and bottles closed in a cupboard.
- Use low intensity and short periods. Your home doesn't need to smell strong all day.
- Ventilate every day. Don't use it in a closed room where a baby sleeps or where an animal is shut in.
- Leave a door open so your pet can leave if the scent bothers it.
- Cats, birds and small animals are especially sensitive to some aromatic compounds. If in doubt, ask your vet before using it. If the animal sneezes, drools or avoids the room, switch it off and ventilate.
- If someone at home has asthma, allergies or sensitivity to smells, check with their doctor first.
With an ultrasonic diffuser there is one more point: it is a tank of water that can be knocked over. More detail in scents and pets.
Which diffuser for each room
| Room | What usually fits | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom | Small ultrasonic or a quiet nebuliser such as SENSE, scheduled | Little noise and off while you sleep |
| Living room or open plan | Nebuliser: LUME (100 m²) or FLOW (120 m²) | Covers more space, can be scheduled and leaves no moisture |
| Bathroom | Compact PULSE nebuliser (7 m²) | No water or cables, with a sensor that activates it when you walk in |
| Entrance or hallway | FLOW, with batteries or USB-C | No socket needed nearby |
| Children's room | Better without a diffuser, or very gentle with ventilation | Caution with little ones |
| Car | ROAM (4 m²), portable | Clips onto the air vent |

Essential oil or fragrance: what to load in each
An essential oil is an aromatic extract obtained from a plant, usually by distillation or pressing. In an ultrasonic diffuser you use a few drops dissolved in water. In a nebuliser, thick oils are not a good idea because they can clog the nozzle.
Our refills are perfumery fragrances formulated for cold nebulisation, in 150 ml (€24.99 in the NATURAL line and €29.99 for the numbered fragrances) and 250 ml (€29.99 and €34.99). They are not diluted in water. The full difference is explained in essential oil or fragrance.
So which one should I buy for home?
- Ultrasonic if it is for a single small room, you will use it now and then, you like seeing the mist and water doesn't bother you.
- Nebuliser if you want to scent the living room or several rooms, have it run on its own schedule and forget about water and moisture.
Our home models are in diffusers for home and professional diffusers for home. If you are torn between several, go through the checklist before buying a waterless diffuser. And if you need one for business premises, the comparison changes: nebuliser or ultrasonic for a business.
Frequently asked questions
Can I leave the diffuser on all night?
It is not the best idea. It is better to schedule it to run for a while before bed and then switch off. You sleep without noise, you don't get used to the scent and you use less fragrance.
Which is quieter, an ultrasonic diffuser or a nebuliser?
An ultrasonic diffuser is usually quieter because it has no pump. Nebulisers vary: BENDIS SENSE runs at 30 dB or less and is designed for bedrooms.
Is a diffuser safe if I have a cat or dog?
It can be used with care: low intensity, a ventilated room, a door left open so the animal can move away and the device out of reach. Cats are especially sensitive, so ask your vet if in doubt.
Can I put essential oils in a BENDIS nebuliser?
We don't recommend it. Thick oils clog the nozzle. Use fragrances formulated for cold nebulisation and don't mix them with water.
How long does a fragrance refill last at home?
A 250 ml refill lasts about 2 months with normal home use, and 3 to 4 months if the device runs gently for a few hours a day. With the device on 24 hours at high intensity, around one month.
