What aromatherapy is and how to use it at home

¿Qué es la aromaterapia y cómo utilizarla en casa? - BENDIS

What aromatherapy is

Aromatherapy is a wellbeing practice that uses essential oils extracted from plants, flowers, roots and resins with the aim of influencing mood and the sense of wellbeing. It is used above all by inhalation, and in some contexts by diluted topical application.

It is worth placing it properly: it is a wellbeing practice, not a medical treatment. There is research pointing to real effects on mood and on the perception of calm, but the evidence is still limited and it replaces no treatment. If you have a health problem, the right step is a healthcare professional.

Why smell has that effect

When we inhale an aroma, the molecules reach the olfactory bulb, which is connected directly to the limbic system: the area of the brain that handles emotion and memory. Visual or auditory information passes through the thalamus first; olfactory information does not.

That explains why a smell can change how you feel in a space within seconds, and why an aroma tied to a memory brings it back whole decades later.

The most widely used profiles and what they are associated with

Lavender. The most studied of all. Associated with calm and with rest routines.

Citrus (lemon, bergamot). A sense of freshness and positive alertness.

Mint. Fresh and clearing. Widely used in work areas.

Green tea. Clean and neutral, one of the few that almost everybody likes.

Woods (sandalwood, cedar). A warm, enveloping register associated with serenity.

How it is diffused at home

Ambient diffusion is the simplest and the most common approach. There are two main technologies:

Ultrasonic. It dilutes the oil in water and turns it into vapour. Cheap and very widespread, but the fragrance comes out heavily diluted, the particles fall within minutes and it adds humidity to the room. Fine for a small bedroom.

Cold nebulisation. Pressurised air atomises the liquid without diluting it and without heating it, into microparticles of 1 to 10 microns that stay suspended for hours. This is the one we use at BENDIS, and the one that makes it possible to cover a whole space evenly.

One point almost nobody explains: heat degrades volatile compounds. Diffusers that work by heating element or by candle alter the composition of what they release.

Precautions

Always work at low intensity, ventilate the space and avoid prolonged diffusion in the bedrooms of babies or small children. If anyone at home has asthma or respiratory sensitivity, check with their doctor first. And if you have pets, some oils affect them: we explain that here.

Never ingest essential oils and never apply them undiluted to the skin.

What we offer at BENDIS

An honest clarification, because everything gets mixed together in this sector: our refills are professional perfumery compositions formulated specifically for cold nebulisation, not pure essential oils for therapeutic use. They are designed for scenting spaces — home, shop, hotel, office — with stable diffusion and without clogging the equipment.

If what you are looking for is aromatherapy in the strict sense, with pure essential oils and therapeutic aims, then a herbalist's shop or a specialist practitioner is your place. If what you are looking for is a space that smells good consistently and in a controlled way, that is very much our field.
