How to make your home smell like a luxury hotel (and what it costs)

Cómo hacer que tu casa huela como un hotel de lujo (y cuánto cuesta) - BENDIS

Short answer: to make your home smell like a luxury hotel you need exactly what the hotel uses: a cold-air nebuliser (not candles or reed sticks), a perfumery fragrance and a soft, steady intensity scheduled by the hour. At home you get there with a unit from €72.99 and a 250 ml refill that, in normal use, lasts around two months.

Here is what a hotel actually does, which scent families five-star hotels turn to, what does not work at home, which unit to choose by square metres and what it costs per year. BENDIS public prices as of September 2026.

What a luxury hotel does to smell like that

When you walk into a good hotel, the scent reaches you before the marble or the light of the lobby. It is not the staff's perfume or a supermarket air freshener. It is professional scenting, and many chains even have their own brand scent, what is known as a corporate scent signature.

Behind it is a hidden device that nebulises the fragrance into extremely fine particles, with no water and no heat, in short cycles throughout the day. Because nothing is heated, the scent does not degrade or turn sickly sweet. And because the particles are so small, they stay suspended in the air instead of falling. That is why the whole room smells and not just one corner. If you want the technical detail, we explain it in what a professional nebuliser is.

The other half is the fragrance: perfumery compositions, at a concentration a supermarket air freshener does not have.

What luxury hotels smell of: the families that keep coming back

There is no single "hotel smell", but nearly every five-star lobby draws on one of these families:

  • White tea and green tea. The most widespread. Clean, calm and not at all invasive.
  • Fine woods. Cedar, sandalwood. They give depth and suit spaces with a lot of fabric.
  • Elegant citrus. Bergamot, grapefruit. Fresh, good for entrances and daytime areas.
  • White flowers. Jasmine, orange blossom. Elegant without being cloying. They work very well in living rooms.
  • Spices, amber and oud. The most powerful register, typical of Middle Eastern luxury. Not every home carries it.

If you are curious how specific chains pick their scent, we cover it in how Ritz, Four Seasons and Mandarin Oriental choose their scent.

Why candles, reed diffusers and sprays do not get there

Method What happens Real reach
Scented candle The heat burns off part of the fragrance. It smells near the flame and stops when you blow it out. Very close to the candle
Reed sticks Passive, slow evaporation. You notice it next to the bottle and your nose saturates straight away. Next to the bottle
Air freshener spray Intense for a few minutes, then gone. Many contain propellant gas. One-off
Humidifier with oil It mixes water and scent: adds humidity, smells faint and the device gets dirty. Weak
Cold-air nebuliser Fine particles with no water or heat, adjustable intensity and hourly scheduling. 7 to 120 m² depending on model

We go into it at more length in reed diffusers, candles and sprays: why they do not really work.

Which diffuser you need by the square metres of your home

The criterion is the same as in a hotel: the square metres of the space you want to smell. Scent does not travel through closed doors, so you plan room by room, not home by home.

Space Unit Coverage Price Tank
Bathroom, dressing room or small hallway BENDIS PULSE Up to 7 m² €72.99 50 ml
Bedroom or medium living room (the quietest, 30 dB or less) BENDIS SENSE Up to 80 m² €89.99 60 ml
Large living room or living room with open kitchen BENDIS LUME Up to 100 m² €109.99 200 ml
Open-plan floor or home with high ceilings BENDIS FLOW Up to 120 m² €79.99 500 ml
Car BENDIS ROAM Up to 4 m² €59.99 5 ml

In a normal flat, the usual setup is one unit in the living room and, if you like, a PULSE in the bathroom. They are controlled from your phone: schedule, intensity and days of the week. Most people have it come on an hour or two before they get home and switch off at night. The full home range is in home diffusers, with more ideas in professional diffusers for the home.

Which fragrance smells like a hotel

If you want Fragrance Family
The classic five-star lobby, warm and enveloping No. 22 (profile inspired by Baccarat Rouge) Sweet, woody
Oriental and intense, Middle Eastern hotel style No. 12 (profile inspired by Arabian Oud) Oriental, amber
Clean, elegant and masculine No. 10 (profile inspired by Terre d'Hermès) Woody, mineral, citrus
The lobby tea of a lifetime, calm and universal Green Tea Green, tea
Green and Mediterranean, very good for living rooms Fig Green, milky
Soft white floral, Andalusian hotel or riad style Orange Blossom or Jasmine Floral
Bedroom and rest areas Lavender Aromatic

These are perfumery fragrances formulated for cold nebulisation, not original perfumes or essential oils. If you are unsure, start with Green Tea: it is the closest to the classic lobby scent. You can see the full range in fragrances and add 5 ml samples to smell them at home before deciding: €1.50 for the NATURAL line, such as Green Tea, and €2.50 for the numbered ones and the neutralisers.

Before you scent: get rid of the background odour

If there is a pet, damp or built-up cooking smell at home, no hotel scent is going to work. Fragrance does not cover an odour, it mixes with it and the result is worse. First you neutralise, then you scent. The neutraliser goes into the same unit:

  • Aloe Vera: pets, fish, damp and tobacco.
  • Cotton Fresh: smoke, burning, toilet odour and sweat.
  • Jasmine: bins, food waste, frying and drains.

What it costs to have your home smell like a hotel

How long a 250 ml bottle lasts depends on intensity, hours and square metres. As a reference: around 2 months in normal home use and 3 to 4 months if you keep it soft for a few hours a day. With a SENSE in the living room and a numbered fragrance at €34.99 for the 250 ml bottle:

Item First year Following years
SENSE unit for the living room €89.99 €0
Fragrance on light use (3 or 4 bottles a year) €104.97 to €139.96 €104.97 to €139.96
Fragrance on normal use (around 6 bottles a year) €209.94 €209.94
Approximate total €195 to €300 €105 to €210

That is between €9 and €18 a month from the second year on. The classic line fragrances, such as Green Tea, Fig or Orange Blossom, come down to €29.99 for the 250 ml bottle: around €180 to €270 the first year and €90 to €180 in the following ones (€7.50 to €15 a month). If you want to fine-tune the figure, see how much fragrance a diffuser uses per month.

If what you have is a business, you can forget about buying: the monthly scenting plan runs from €29.90 to €94.90 + VAT a month depending on the unit, with the device and the fragrance included and no minimum term, in Spain and Portugal. And if you are wondering what a real hotel pays to scent its lobby, that is in what it costs to scent a hotel lobby.

Four mistakes that ruin the hotel effect

Diluting the fragrance in water. Never. These units nebulise the fragrance as it is; water adds nothing and damages the system.

Running it flat out all day. Your nose saturates and stops picking the scent up. The hotel effect is medium intensity in short cycles.

Always using the same scent. With one fixed scent you end up not smelling it. Rotating between two or three favourites avoids that.

Forgetting to clean it. The nebuliser is cleaned every 3 months. Otherwise the nozzle clogs and the scent drops off.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best air freshener for a large home?

A cold-air nebuliser, not an air freshener. For a living room of up to 100 m², the LUME (€109.99), which also has a presence sensor and a level alert. For an open-plan floor of up to 120 m², the FLOW (€79.99).

Is it noisy?

The SENSE runs at 30 dB or less and the LUME at 38 dB or less. Even so, most people schedule them not to run while they sleep.

Can I smell the fragrances before buying?

Yes. There are 5 ml samples: €1.50 for the NATURAL line and €2.50 for the numbered ones and the neutralisers. Order two or three from the families that appeal to you and smell them at home.

What if I get tired of the scent?

You change it. In fact that is a good idea: alternating between two or three fragrances stops your nose getting used to them and tuning them out.

Does it help with cooking smells?

That is what the neutralisers are for. Jasmine is designed for food, bins and frying, and it goes into the same unit. Neutralise first, scent afterwards.
