Cat smell at home: the problem is the litter box
Short answer: a healthy cat barely smells; what smells is where it lives, above all the litter box. You fix it by cleaning the tray every day, keeping it somewhere ventilated and, for the smell left in the air, a small diffuser with the Aloe Vera neutraliser at minimum intensity and away from the tray.
Where the smell really is
- The litter box: cat urine is very concentrated and you notice the ammonia as soon as the litter is saturated.
- The scratching post and blankets: cats mark with glands on their face and paws, and those fabrics build up odour.
- Resting spots: the sofa, the bed or the basket where it sleeps.
How to get rid of litter box smell
- Scoop every day and change all the litter regularly, washing the tray with water and mild soap.
- Pick the right spot: ventilated, never inside a cupboard or a windowless bathroom.
- Wash blankets and covers where it sleeps and vacuum the scratching post.
- Wee outside the box: enzyme cleaner, no bleach or ammonia. If it keeps happening, talk to your vet, as it can be a sign of a health problem.
- Neutralise the air in that room with a diffuser at minimum intensity.
Which device for the litter box area
| Where the litter box is | Device | Pack with Aloe Vera (VAT incl.) |
|---|---|---|
| Bathroom, utility room or small room (up to 7 m²) | PULSE, battery powered | €94.99 with 150 ml |
| A room or open area (up to 80 m²) | SENSE | €114.99 with 150 ml |
| You already have a BENDIS diffuser | Just the refill | €29.99 (150 ml) |
The PULSE is triggered by a presence sensor, so in the litter box room it will also switch on when the cat walks in. That's why: minimum intensity, the device placed high and away from the tray. We don't sell sprays: the neutraliser is always used in a diffuser.
Cats and scents: precautions
Cats are particularly sensitive to many aromatic compounds and to essential oils. We won't simply tell you a scent is cat safe, so these are our rules:
- Minimum intensity and a ventilated room.
- Never next to the litter box, food bowl or water, and never pointed at the cat.
- Door open so it can leave. If it stops using the litter box or avoids the room, switch the device off or move it.
- If your cat has asthma or another breathing problem, ask your vet first. We'll send you the neutraliser's safety data sheet if you ask us at info@bendis.es.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my cat's litter box smell so much?
Because cat urine is very concentrated and, once the litter is saturated, it releases ammonia. Scooping daily and fully changing the litter regularly makes the biggest difference.
Can I put the diffuser next to the litter box?
No. The cat may reject the litter box if it smells something unusual. The device goes in the room, high up and away from the tray.
Is the neutraliser safe for cats?
We don't make veterinary claims. It's used in the air, at minimum intensity, away from the cat, its food and its litter box. If in doubt, ask your vet.
Do you have a spray for the litter box?
No. Our neutralisers are refills for diffusers. For the litter box area, the device designed for small spaces is the PULSE.
What about the smell of the scratching post?
Vacuum the post and wash or replace any fabric parts. The neutraliser deals with the smell left in the room.
How long does the refill last?
At minimum intensity in a small space, a refill lasts much longer than in a living room. As a guide, 250 ml lasts 3 to 4 months on a gentle setting for a few hours a day.
