Short answer: if your home smells of cat, it almost certainly smells of litter box. Scoop every day, change all the litter regularly, put the tray somewhere ventilated and clean any urine outside the box with an enzymatic cleaner. For the smell left in the air, a small diffuser with a neutraliser at minimum intensity, always well away from the tray.
Cats wash themselves several times a day. The animal itself hardly smells. What smells is what it leaves behind: the litter box, the scratching post, the blanket on the sofa. Understanding this changes how you tackle the problem.
Why the litter box smells so strongly
Cat urine is very concentrated. When the litter is saturated, bacteria break it down and release ammonia, that sharp smell you notice when you open the door. If the litter box is in a cupboard or a bathroom without a window, the smell builds up and clings to everything around it.
Where it smells and what to do
| Area | Why it smells | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Litter box | Concentrated urine and ammonia | Scoop daily, fresh litter regularly, wash the tray |
| Scratching post | Cats mark with their paws | Vacuum and replace worn fabric parts |
| Blankets and sofa | Hair and skin oils | Wash covers and blankets, vacuum |
| Urine outside the box | Marking or a health problem | Enzymatic cleaner, and see the vet if it keeps happening |
| The air in the room | Everything above keeps releasing smell | Ventilate and neutralise at minimum intensity |
Where you put the litter box matters more than you think
Ideally a quiet, ventilated corner: a utility room, a bathroom with a window, a covered balcony. Away from their food and water. If you have more than one cat, one litter box per cat is best.
How to neutralise the smell without upsetting your cat
This needs care. Cats are particularly sensitive to many aromatic compounds and to essential oils, and if the litter box smells odd they may stop using it. So:
- No spray air fresheners and no scented litter near the tray.
- The diffuser goes in the room, but up high and away from the tray, the food bowl and the water.
- Minimum intensity, a ventilated room and the door open so the cat can leave.
- If the cat avoids the room or stops using the litter box, switch the device off.
For a bathroom or small room of up to 7 m², the PULSE (€72.99, battery powered) with the Aloe Vera neutraliser (from €29.99). Bear in mind that the PULSE is triggered by presence, including when the cat walks in: hence the minimum intensity. You will find the packs on the cat litter box smell page.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my house smell of cat if I clean the litter box?
The litter may be saturated even if you scoop, the tray may be scratched and hold on to smell, or there may be urine outside the box that you have not found. A UV torch helps you find old stains.
Which neutraliser is best for cat smell?
Aloe Vera is the one for animal odour. If the problem is mainly concentrated urine, Jasmine is the one of our three neutralisers that handles it best.
Is a neutraliser safe around cats?
We do not make veterinary claims. Used in the room, at minimum intensity and away from the cat, its litter box and its food, is how we recommend it. If your cat has asthma or breathing problems, ask your vet first and ask us for the product safety data sheet.
Can I put the diffuser next to the litter box?
No. The cat may reject the litter box. Always up high and out of the way.
How often should I change the litter?
It depends on the type of litter and the number of cats. What always applies: scoop daily and change it completely before it starts to smell.
