How to get rid of dog smell in the house
Short answer: dog smell comes from the oils in their skin and coat, which settle into sofas, rugs and curtains. You get rid of it in two steps: wash everything the dog lies on and keep neutralising the air with a diffuser loaded with the Aloe Vera neutraliser. A spray air freshener only covers it for a while.
Why your house smells of dog even when you clean
A dog produces odour every day: fatty acids and amines that dissolve in oil, not water, and cling to fabrics. On top of that, you get used to it and stop noticing, but visitors smell it at the door. That's why mopping the floor isn't enough and why the smell is back two days later.
The plan that works
- Wash the dog's bed and blankets every week, at 60 °C if the fabric allows, and keep a spare.
- Vacuum hair every day during moulting season, under the sofa too.
- Dry your dog well after rain or a bath: wet dog smell is moisture plus bacteria.
- Dog wee smell: blot without rubbing and use an enzyme cleaner. No bleach or ammonia, which encourage the dog to mark the same spot again.
- Neutralise the air with a nebuliser where the dog spends most of its time, on a schedule and at low intensity.
Which device for your home
| Your home | Device | Pack with Aloe Vera (VAT incl.) |
|---|---|---|
| Flat up to 120 m² | FLOW (battery or mains) | €109.99 with 250 ml |
| Living room or flat up to 100 m² | LUME | €139.99 with 250 ml |
| One room up to 80 m² | SENSE | €119.99 with 250 ml |
| You already have a BENDIS diffuser | Just the refill | €29.99 (150 ml) or €34.99 (250 ml) |
The pack includes the diffuser, the neutraliser and 2 fragrance samples of 5 ml, in case you want to scent another room once the background smell has gone. A 250 ml refill lasts about 2 months with normal use. You can change model and colour in the home pack.
What about sprays for dog smell? They last minutes and mix with the smell. We don't sell them because they don't solve the underlying problem.
With your dog around, use common sense
- Low intensity: a dog's sense of smell is far sharper than yours.
- Keep the device away from its bed, food and water, and never pointed at the dog.
- Ventilated room with the door open. If the dog avoids the room, lower the intensity or move the device.
- Puppies, older dogs or dogs with breathing problems: ask your vet first.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get rid of dog smell in the house for good?
As long as the dog lives with you, the smell keeps being produced, so what works is consistency: fabrics washed every week and a neutraliser working continuously in its area.
How long until I notice a difference?
If you've washed the fabrics first, the air improves within a few days. If the smell is deep in a sofa or rug, those need a thorough clean.
Does it work on dog urine smell?
For the stain, an enzyme cleaner. For the smell left in the air, the neutraliser. If the problem is an area with a lot of urine, the Jasmine neutraliser handles urine best.
Does it bother the dog?
At low intensity and away from the dog, most dogs don't react at all. Watch its behaviour for the first few days and adjust.
Can I use a fragrance instead of the neutraliser?
You can, but it mixes with the dog smell and usually ends up worse. Neutralise first, then add fragrance if you want.
Does it run on batteries?
The FLOW works on batteries or plugged in. The LUME and SENSE need a cable.
