A scent nebuliser needs its circuit and nozzle cleaned every 3 months, and sooner if it runs many hours or when you change fragrance. You do it by running cleaning alcohol through the unit for a few minutes. Never water, never needles in the nozzle and never mixed fragrances.
A professional nebuliser is a simple device with one critical part: the nozzle. If it clogs, the unit works but no mist comes out, and most people think it is broken. It almost never is.
The good news is that a waterless diffuser needs hardly any maintenance: no tank to scrub, no limescale, no mould. We explain it in why BENDIS diffusers use no water. What it does need is this routine clean.
Why the nozzle clogs
Cold-air nebulisation breaks the fragrance into very fine particles as it passes through a small opening. Over time, a tiny amount of product stays on the walls of the circuit and gradually narrows the passage. It happens with any fragrance and any brand, and faster if the unit runs many hours, is left idle with product inside or if fragrances are mixed.
So cleaning is not a repair: it is normal maintenance, like changing the filter on a kitchen hood. Ten minutes every few months prevents almost every issue.
How often to clean
| Use | Examples | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Quick check | Look at the refill level and wipe the outside with a dry cloth | Every week |
| Normal | Home, office, shop | Every 3 months |
| Intensive | Gym, hotel, large store, many hours a day | Every 1 or 2 months |
| Always | When changing fragrance, before storing the unit or if it suddenly smells weaker | Straight away |
Cleaning, step by step
You need isopropyl alcohol of 90% or more, which dissolves the residue and evaporates without a trace, a soft cloth for the outside and about ten minutes.
- Switch off the unit and disconnect the power.
- Remove the bottle and keep the one you were using tightly closed, or pour what is left back into its original container.
- Put 5 to 10 ml of alcohol into the empty bottle (or into a container with the unit's connector) and refit it.
- Run the unit for about ten minutes at maximum, with a window open, so the alcohol passes through the circuit and carries the residue away.
- Switch off, remove the leftover alcohol and let the bottle and head air-dry before fitting the fragrance again.
The alcohol comes in a 50 ml bottle in the nebuliser cleaning kit. The exact procedure for your model, with the nozzle position and connector type, is on the manuals and video tutorials page.
What you should never do
- Put water in the circuit. Water does not dissolve the residue and can also stay inside.
- Poke the nozzle with a pin or needle. The opening gets deformed and the unit never nebulises the same way again.
- Use harsh chemical cleaners. They damage the circuit.
- Mix two fragrances in the same bottle.
- Refill an empty bottle with another brand's product without cleaning the circuit first.
- Leave the unit idle for months with product inside.
- Use very thick oils or products not made for nebulisation. They clog the circuit much sooner. BENDIS refills are concentrated fragrances made in Spain with the viscosity cold-air nebulisation needs.
Signs it is time to clean
- The unit makes noise but no mist comes out.
- The mist is weaker than usual.
- The scent is less noticeable even though you have not changed the settings.
- Product consumption has dropped for no reason.
Be careful with the third one. Before turning up the intensity, consider whether you have simply got used to it: the nose stops noticing constant smells around it. If you turn up the output for that reason, you end up with a space that smells too strong to visitors. Clean first and, if the scent comes back, leave the settings alone.
And if it still does not work
Check that the suction tube reaches the bottom of the bottle and is not bent, that the bottle is screwed on properly and that there is enough product. On battery models, also check they are charged. More possible causes in my diffuser is not releasing scent: causes and fixes.
If after cleaning and these checks nothing changes, email us at info@bendis.es with the model and we will go through it with you.
Other care that extends the unit's life
- Place it on a stable surface, at mid height and with the outlet clear, with no furniture or curtains in front.
- Avoid direct sun on the bottle, radiators and other heat sources, and areas with water splashes.
- Do not lay it on its side with the bottle fitted.
- Use the intensity you need, not the maximum. Fewer hours flat out means less residue.

Frequently asked questions
How often should a scent diffuser be cleaned?
Every 3 months with normal use. With intensive use, every 1 or 2 months, and always when you change fragrance.
Can I clean the nebuliser with water?
No. Water does not dissolve fragrance residue and can stay inside the circuit. Use cleaning alcohol.
Can I use surgical spirit from the pharmacy?
Pharmacy alcohol is usually 70% or 96% ethanol and sometimes contains additives. The recommended option is isopropyl alcohol of 90% or more, which evaporates without leaving residue.
Can I mix two fragrances in the same diffuser?
It is not recommended. The result is unpredictable and traces of one affect the next. Clean the unit before switching.
Why does my diffuser make noise but release no scent?
The most common cause is a clogged nozzle. Clean it with alcohol and check the suction tube and the bottle level.
