Short answer: if your diffuser is not releasing scent, the most likely causes are that your nose has adapted, the nozzle is clogged or the tube does not reach the liquid. After that come a loose bottle, scheduling, intensity and power supply. Check in this order: it is almost always solved without replacing the unit.
Before writing a unit off as broken, this list solves the vast majority of cases. It is ordered from most to least likely.
Quick diagnosis
| Symptom | Likely cause | Point |
|---|---|---|
| Mist comes out but you cannot smell it | Olfactory adaptation or low intensity | 1 and 7 |
| It makes noise but no mist comes out | Clogged nozzle, tube or level | 2, 3 and 4 |
| Little mist or only intermittently | Loose bottle or power supply | 5 and 8 |
| Does nothing at all | Scheduling or battery | 6 and 8 |
1. Your nose has adapted
This is the most common cause and has nothing to do with the device. If you spend hours in the same space, you stop noticing the scent. Step outside for five minutes and walk back in. If you notice it as you come in, the unit is working and nothing needs changing. Also ask someone arriving from outside.
2. The nozzle is clogged
Fragrance residue builds up in the opening. The unit makes noise but no mist comes out. It is fixed by cleaning with isopropyl alcohol: empty the reservoir, add 5 to 10 ml of alcohol, let it run for a few minutes, remove what is left and reload. Follow the manual for your model. To stop it happening again, clean the nebuliser every 3 months and whenever you change scent. Step by step in maintenance and nozzle cleaning.
3. The suction tube does not reach the product
When changing the bottle, the tube can end up bent or too short. Check that it reaches the bottom and is not kinked.
4. There is less product left than it seems
With the bottle in place it is hard to see the real level. If the tube does not reach the liquid, the unit runs empty. As a guide, a 250 ml refill lasts about 2 months in a mid-sized unit, but it depends a lot on intensity, hours and floor area. If you reckon there should be some left and there is not, see how much fragrance a diffuser uses per month.
5. The bottle is not properly closed
If air gets in through the thread, the unit loses pressure and does not nebulise. Tighten by hand, without forcing.
6. The unit is paused by its schedule
Very common: the programmed schedule does not match the moment you are looking at it, or today is not one of the active days. Check the schedule in the app or on the display. Also check the unit's clock: after a power cut or a time change it may be out of sync.
7. The intensity is too low for the space
If you have moved the unit to a bigger room, with a higher ceiling or more draught, the same setting no longer works. Go up one step and wait 48 hours before judging again.
If even at maximum it does not reach, the unit may be too small for the floor area. As a reference: SENSE covers 80 m², LUME 100 m², FLOW 120 m² and ORBIT or ATMOS 600 m². It is all in the diffuser size by square metres table.
8. Low battery or insufficient power supply
On battery models, when charge is low the unit reduces output before switching off. On USB models, a low-power charger can cause the same symptom. Use the cable and charger supplied with the unit.
A separate case: a bad smell masking the scent
If the space has a background odour (damp, tobacco, drains), the fragrance mixes with it and seems not to smell. What is missing there is not more intensity but neutralising first. We explain it in odour neutralisation.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my diffuser make noise but nothing comes out?
It is almost always a clogged nozzle, a tube that does not reach the liquid or a loose bottle. Clean it with isopropyl alcohol and check the tube and the thread.
Can I add water to the fragrance so more comes out?
No. In a nebuliser, water clogs the nozzle and makes the problem worse. Always load the fragrance undiluted.
How often do I need to clean the diffuser?
Every 3 months and whenever you change fragrance. That prevents most blockages.
