Why a business cannot be scented with household air fresheners

Aromatización vs ambientadores: por qué no es lo mismo - BENDIS

Short answer: a business cannot be scented properly with household air fresheners because they do not cover the size of the premises, do not keep the same scent all day, come across as a cheap product and force staff to keep replacing them. Professional scenting uses programmed nebulisers and, when needed, neutralisation. With the monthly scenting subscription, from €29.90 to €94.90 + VAT per month.

This article is only for businesses: restaurants, shops, hotels, offices, clinics or gyms. If you are looking for a home air freshener, see the home air freshener comparison.

Air freshener and scenting are not the same

An air freshener adds scent on top of what is already there. It works by layering: sprays, reed diffusers, candles, gels, plug-ins or aerosol dispensers. They are designed for a home: small spaces, occasional use, a burst of smell you can notice.

Professional scenting is something else. A nebuliser spreads the fragrance continuously and on a schedule throughout the premises. And when there is a bad smell (kitchen, changing rooms, toilets), it is neutralised first. We explain it on the odour neutralisation page.

Why commercial premises cannot be scented with household air fresheners

1. Coverage

A spray or reed diffuser scents one spot. Commercial premises have square metres, high ceilings, doors opening and air conditioning moving the air. However many units you use, the distribution is uneven: it smells strongly next to the device and not at all at the back. A professional nebuliser is sized for the space: the ORBIT and ATMOS cover 600 m², the HALO 800 m² and the NOVA up to 1,600 m².

2. Consistency

The customer at 10 am and the one at 8 pm should smell the same thing. A spray lasts minutes. A reed diffuser loses intensity over the days. A nebuliser is programmed to opening hours, days and intensity, and the scent stays steady.

3. Image

That "toilet air freshener" smell is recognised instantly, and customers think something is being covered up. A visible aerosol dispenser in well-kept premises detracts. A discreet device, or one connected to the air conditioning, makes the scent feel like part of the space.

4. Real cost

An air freshener looks cheap per unit. But in commercial premises you need to buy many, replace them often and someone on the team has to keep an eye on them. And it still does not solve the bad smell. With the scenting subscription the cost is fixed each month, with device and fragrance included.

5. Real bad smells

Kitchens, frying, changing rooms, shared toilets, damp. Here an air freshener makes things worse, because it mixes with the smell. Neutralisation acts on the bad smell before scenting.

When you need professional scenting

  • Any business with customers coming and going.
  • Premises with difficult smells: kitchen, changing rooms, toilets, damp areas.
  • Brands where image matters: hotels, shops, clinics.
  • Chains or groups with several sites that want the same scent in all of them.

There is information by type of business in scenting by sector and city, for example for restaurants, gyms or hotels.

Common mistakes in businesses

"I have put out twenty reed diffusers and I cannot smell them"

The reeds lose strength and staff get used to the smell. Customers notice an uneven smell, not an atmosphere.

"Plug-ins are already automatic"

They release concentrated scent next to the socket, with no schedules and no distribution across the premises.

"I use more spray so it is more noticeable"

It is more noticeable for a few minutes. Then the background smell comes back, mixed with the spray.

"It smells of sweat, but air freshener gets rid of it"

It does not get rid of it, it covers it. Changing rooms need neutralisation.

How much the scenting subscription costs

From €29.90 to €94.90 + VAT per month depending on the device, with device and fragrance included. No minimum term: cancel with 30 days' notice. Available in Spain and Portugal. In practice it is an all-inclusive rental, but without a multi-year commitment. The device arrives ready to place, with no building work.

Frequently asked questions

Can I combine air fresheners with professional scenting in my premises?

It makes no sense. Air fresheners break the consistency of the scent and clash with the device's fragrance. If you have some, use them up in private areas such as the storeroom or office.

What does the scenting subscription include?

The device and the fragrance each month, with a change of scent whenever you want. It ranges from €29.90 to €94.90 + VAT per month depending on the device, with no minimum term and 30 days' notice.

How long does it take to notice?

The atmosphere changes from day one. If smells are deeply embedded in textiles or walls, neutralisation needs more time running continuously.

Which device do my premises need?

It depends on the square metres and the layout. Open premises of up to 600 m² can work with an ORBIT. If the space is divided, one device per area is better. Ask us via businesses.

Do you cover all of Spain?

The scenting subscription is available in Spain and Portugal. You can write to info@bendis.es or call 911 09 70 50.
