Your BENDIS diffuser has arrived. The good news is that there is no complicated set-up and nothing to assemble: it will be running in five minutes. This guide takes you through the process.
Step 1: choose the spot
Because it uses no water, you can put it almost anywhere without worrying about spills or damp.
- A stable surface where it cannot be knocked over.
- At mid-height and in a thoroughfare. The scent spreads better where air is circulating than in an enclosed corner.
- Near a power socket, unless you have a battery model.
- Not right beside an open window or in front of a fan. There the scent is gone before it has spread.
Step 2: fit the refill
Open the compartment, screw the refill bottle onto the nebulising head and put it back into the base, fully upright and properly seated. There is no water to add and nothing to dilute.
Use refills formulated for cold nebulisation. Thick cosmetic oils can block the unit's channels, and that kind of damage cannot always be repaired.
Step 3: plug it in and switch it on
Connect the unit to the mains and press the power button.
Step 4: adjust the intensity
Start low. It is the most important piece of advice in the whole guide.
The temptation is to run the unit at maximum on the first day to check that it works. The result is a saturated space that visitors find overpowering. The aim is for the scent to be perceived without being identified: if someone thinks “it smells strong in here”, it is too high.
Turn it up gradually over the first few days until you find the right level. On programmable models, take the opportunity to set schedules: more presence when people are around, off when they are not.
Step 5: give it a few days
A couple of notes on what you will notice:
- You will barely hear it. It runs very quietly, with none of the bubbling of an ultrasonic unit.
- You will not see any mist. That is normal. The particles are too small to see and still carry the full aromatic load. Seeing nothing does not mean it is not working.
- You will stop smelling it before anyone else does. It is called olfactory adaptation and it happens to everyone. Do not turn the intensity up because of it: ask someone who has just walked in.

If what you really had was a bad smell
If the reason you bought the unit is a specific odour, a pet, damp, tobacco or cooking, what you need is not a fragrance, it is a neutraliser refill. Fragrance over a bad smell does not mask it: it mixes with it and comes across worse. How neutralisation works.

Every one to three months, cleaning the nozzle with isopropyl alcohol, never with water, keeps performance just as it was on day one.
