The most common mistakes when scenting a venue are starting at maximum intensity, buying a unit that is too big, covering everything with fragrance instead of neutralizing, not setting schedules and forgetting to clean. Almost all of them can be fixed for free, just by adjusting placement and programming.
After setting up units in hotels, restaurants, shops and gyms, the same mistakes keep coming up. Here are the ten most common, each with its fix.
1. Starting at maximum
On day one everyone turns the intensity up because «it doesn't smell». Your nose adapts in minutes, the room doesn't. Fix: start at the lowest setting and go up one step every two days. The method is in how to choose your diffuser's intensity.
2. Buying a unit that is too big
A 600 m² unit in a 40 m² venue overpowers the space and uses much more product. Fix: size it by the real square metres, and only move up if you have high ceilings or a lot of draught. The table by floor area is in which diffuser you need for your square metres.
3. Putting it by the door pointing outwards
The scent ends up in the street. Fix: place it near the entrance but facing inwards, and up high.
4. Covering a bad smell with fragrance
Frying, damp or changing-room smells are not solved with perfume. Fix: neutralizer at the source and fragrance in the front-of-house area, never both in the same spot. BENDIS has three neutralizers: Aloe Vera (pets, damp, tobacco), Cotton Fresh (smoke, toilets, sweat) and Jasmine (bins, food, drains). More in odour neutralization.
5. Not setting schedules
Scenting an empty venue in the small hours is throwing product away. Fix: start 30 minutes before opening and stop at closing time.
6. Changing scent every month
The value of an olfactory profile lies in repetition. If you keep changing, customers don't associate anything with you. Fix: choose one, stick with it and use seasonality only as a nuance.
7. Choosing the scent the owner likes
Your personal taste and your brand positioning don't have to match. Fix: start from how you want the business to be perceived and translate that into scent families. Try two or three with 5 ml samples before deciding.
8. Forgetting to clean the nozzle
The unit makes a noise but doesn't nebulize, and people assume it is broken. Fix: clean the circuit with alcohol every 3 months, and sooner if it runs long hours or you change fragrance. Step by step in diffuser maintenance and nozzle cleaning and in the manuals.
9. Judging the result from inside
If you have been in the venue for two hours, your nose is no longer a reliable gauge. Fix: step out for five minutes, come back in and judge at that moment. Or ask someone who has just arrived.
10. Not fixing the basics before scenting
A dry drain trap, a dirty air-conditioning filter, bins not emptied, damp textiles. No unit can compete with an active source. Fix: check those four points before switching anything on.

Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't my venue smell even though the diffuser is on?
Most often you have simply got used to the scent. Step out for a few minutes and come back in. If you still can't notice it, check the nozzle, the bottle level and the unit's coverage.
What intensity should I start with?
The lowest. Raise it one step every two days until someone coming in from outside notices it without finding it strong.
Can I use fragrance and neutralizer at the same time?
Yes, but in different areas. Neutralizer at the source of the bad smell and fragrance where the customers are.
