Which air freshener lasts longest: duration and monthly cost of each type

Ambientador para casa duradero: por qué el nebulizador gana siempre - BENDIS

Short answer: the air freshener that lasts longest is the cold-air nebuliser, because it works on its own, on a schedule, and diffuses fragrance without water or heat. A 250 ml BENDIS refill (€29.99 in the NATURAL line and €34.99 for a numbered fragrance or neutraliser) lasts around two months in normal home use, which works out at about €15 to €17.50 a month. Sprays, candles, reed diffusers and plug-ins run out or lose strength sooner.

How long each type of air freshener lasts

When someone looks for an air freshener that lasts, they are really asking two different things: how long the smell is noticeable in the air and how long the product takes to run out. A reed diffuser can take a long time to empty and still stop being noticeable early on. That is why we separate them in the table.

TypeHow it worksHow long you notice the scentHow long the refill lastsNeeds attention
SprayA single burst by handMinutesDepends on how often you sprayYes, every time
Reed diffuserLiquid rises up the reeds and evaporatesStrong at first, then fadesWeeks, but losing intensityLittle
CandleThe heat of the flame evaporates the fragranceWhile it is litDepends on how many hours you burn itYes, never leave it alone
Plug-inA heating element warms a refillNear the socketWeeksLittle
UltrasonicVibration turns scented water into vapourWhile it runsHours, water needs refillingYes, frequent refilling
Cold-air nebuliserPressurised air atomises the fragrance without waterWhile it is scheduled1 to 4 months with 250 ml, depending on useNo, it runs on a schedule

The technical reason behind each case (evaporation, droplets that fall, a nose that gets used to it) is explained in why reed diffusers, candles and sprays do not really work.

How much an air freshener costs per month

We are not going to quote other brands' prices, because they vary a lot and every household buys differently. What we do recommend is doing the real maths: add up what you spend in a month on sprays, plug-in refills, reed diffusers and candles. It often comes to more than it seems, especially if you have to keep topping up to notice it.

With a BENDIS nebuliser the calculation is simple, because the cost is the refill:

How you use itApproximate duration of 250 mlApproximate monthly cost
24 hours on high1 monthBetween €29.99 and €34.99
Normal home useAbout 2 monthsAbout €15 to €17.50
Low, a few hours a day3 to 4 monthsBetween €7.50 and €11.66

These are guide figures: they depend on intensity, schedule and square metres. Refills cost from €24.99 (150 ml) in the NATURAL line and €29.99 (150 ml) for the numbered fragrances and neutralisers; in 250 ml, €29.99 and €34.99. In the table, the lower figure is for the NATURAL line and the higher one for a numbered fragrance or neutraliser. You can see them all in the fragrance collection. On top of that there is the one-off purchase of the device: you have the comparison by price and square metres in best home air freshener by price and coverage.

Why a nebuliser lasts longer

It does not dilute the fragrance. Refills are not mixed with water, so every pulse carries real scent.

It works in pulses. It diffuses for a moment, stops, and diffuses again. That keeps the atmosphere steady without wasting fragrance.

It can be scheduled. If it only runs when you are at home, the refill lasts much longer. How to make the most of schedules is covered in the guide to automatic and programmable air fresheners.

It really covers the space. Each model has its own coverage, so you do not have to push it to maximum power to reach everywhere.

How to make the refill last longer

  • Schedule time slots when people are at home, not 24 hours.
  • Start on low intensity. If you notice it when you walk in, that is enough.
  • Choose a device suited to the size of the space. A small one at full power uses more and spreads the scent worse.
  • Do not place it next to an open window or in the stream of the air conditioning.
  • Clean the nebuliser every 3 months so it atomises properly.

What stops any air freshener from lasting

A bad background smell. If there is a pet, tobacco or damp smell at home, the fragrance mixes with it and seems not to last. First you neutralise the bad smell and then you add a scent. There is a guide to choosing a neutraliser by type of smell and another one specifically on removing pet smells from your home.

Frequently asked questions

Which air freshener lasts the longest?

The programmable cold-air nebuliser. It runs on its own schedule and a 250 ml refill lasts between one and four months depending on intensity and hours of use.

How long does a reed diffuser last?

The liquid can last weeks, but the scent loses strength well before that. On top of that, your nose gets used to it and stops noticing it even while it is still evaporating.

How much does an aroma diffuser cost per month?

With a BENDIS nebuliser in normal home use, between €15 (NATURAL line) and €17.50 (numbered fragrance or neutraliser) a month in refills. If you use it on low for a few hours a day, it drops to about €7.50 to €12.

Can you dilute the fragrance in water to make it last longer?

No. BENDIS fragrances are made for cold-air nebulisation and are used as they are, without water. The nebuliser is designed to atomise them undiluted, and it does not work properly with water.

How often should the nebuliser be cleaned?

Every 3 months. That way it atomises properly and the refill lasts as long as it should.
