Scent marketing is no longer just for the big chains. This guide explains what types of provider exist in Madrid, how they differ and what you should ask before signing.
A market that has opened up
For years, scenting a space professionally required an upfront investment that only made sense for chain hotels or large retail spaces. The hotel sector drove adoption in Spain, and from there it has spread to restaurants, retail, clinics and offices.
What has changed is not the technology but the way you access it: monthly rental removes the barrier to entry, and that has brought businesses into the market that were previously left out.
Three types of provider
Large-format projects
Companies focused on large installations: shopping centres, airports, chains with dozens of sites. They work with HVAC integration and bespoke fragrance development, with high upfront investment. It makes sense above a certain size, not for a small business.
Selling the equipment outright
They sell you the diffuser and the refills, and from there the system is your job: buying fragrance when it runs out, sorting out any faults and remembering to restock. It works well if you have someone to manage it in-house.
Service with a monthly fee
The provider supplies the equipment and charges a fee that includes the fragrance and the refills. No upfront investment and no stock to manage. This is the model we work with at BENDIS.
What to ask before you sign
- Is there a minimum term, and what does cancelling cost? It is what decides most of the money and it is usually in the small print.
- What exactly does the fee include? Ask for the breakdown: whether the fragrance is charged separately, whether delivery is invoiced, whether support is paid for.
- Does it cover the size of your space? A 7 m² washroom and a 1,600 m² lobby are not solved by the same device.
- Can you smell the fragrance first? A scent changes with the materials, the ventilation and the temperature of the premises. Choosing it by its name is playing blind.
- Can you have a fragrance of your own? It matters if you are after brand identity and not just ambience.
These questions apply to any provider, us included. Ask for the answers in writing and compare them yourself.
