How to set your diffuser intensity without saturating the space

Cómo elegir la intensidad de tu difusor de aroma sin saturar el espacio - BENDIS

To choose the intensity of a scent diffuser, always start at the lowest level, wait 48 hours and check by walking in from the street. If you notice nothing, go up a single step and repeat. Short bursts with long pauses give a more natural smell than a high continuous level, and scheduling saves fragrance without anyone noticing.

Almost every "it smells too strong" or "I can't smell anything" query is not about the unit. It is about the settings. And settings have a method.

The three parameters

  • Intensity or level. How much product comes out in each burst.
  • Work time. How many seconds it nebulises in a row.
  • Pause time. How long it waits until the next burst.

Most people only touch the first one. The one that changes perception most is the third: short bursts and long pauses feel much more natural than a continuous stream.

The method, in four steps

  1. Start at the minimum. Always. Going up is easy. Going down takes days, because the scent is already in fabrics and surfaces.
  2. Wait 48 hours. Scent takes time to settle in a space.
  3. Step outside for five minutes and walk back in. Your nose inside is no longer reliable: it has adapted.
  4. Go up a single step if you notice nothing when you walk in. And repeat the cycle.

Guidelines by type of space

Space Suggested intensity Schedule
Office As low as possible Working hours
Shop Low Continuous during opening hours
Restaurant Medium at the entrance, low in the dining room By service slots
Hotel Medium in the lobby, low in corridors All day, softer at night
Gym Medium Higher at peak times
Toilets and changing rooms Short, frequent cycles With neutraliser
Home Low Morning and evening, off at night

Toilets and changing rooms use a neutraliser, not fragrance. The reason is explained in odour neutralisation.

Factors that mean turning it up

High ceilings, strong draughts, doors open to the street and hard surfaces with no textiles. In those cases the air is renewed faster and the unit has to work harder, or you need one with more coverage. If you are at the limit, check which diffuser to choose by square metres.

Factors that mean turning it down

Small closed spaces, textiles that hold scent (carpet, curtains, upholstery) and the same people being present for many hours at a time.

The right unit makes adjustment easier

A small unit at maximum in a large space never works well: it saturates nearby and does not reach far. A properly sized one runs at medium output and spreads better. As a reference: LUME covers 100 m² and FLOW 120 m²; for 600 m² or more there are ORBIT, ATMOS and HALO. You will find them all in the diffuser catalogue.

Most common setting mistakes

  • Turning up the intensity every time you stop smelling it. In the end the space smells too strong to anyone walking in and you still do not notice it.
  • Judging on day one. Until 48 hours have passed, the scent has not fully spread.
  • Placing the unit by the door. The draught carries the scent away and it seems to lack power.
  • Leaving it on overnight in a closed business. It wastes fragrance and first thing in the morning the air feels heavy.

Scheduling

It is what saves most and what is used least. Just starting 30 minutes before opening and stopping at closing time clearly reduces consumption without customers noticing anything. If you want to know how long each refill lasts with your settings, we explain it in how long a 150 or 250 ml refill lasts.

For app-controlled models it is explained step by step in the video tutorials, and for the rest it is in your unit's instruction manual. You have both in manuals and tutorials.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I smell my diffuser any more?

It is almost always olfactory adaptation: your nose stops registering a constant smell. Step outside for five minutes and come back in before turning up the intensity. If it still does not smell, it may need cleaning.

Is high intensity for a few hours better than low intensity all day?

Low and steady during the hours of use. It gives a more stable atmosphere and avoids tiring peaks.

How long does it take to set up a diffuser properly?

Between one and two weeks, going up one step every 48 hours if needed.
