How to get rid of a damp smell in your premises without building work

Cómo eliminar el olor a humedad en un local sin hacer obra - BENDIS

To get rid of a damp smell in commercial premises without building work, first check for dry drain traps, air-conditioning filters and damp textiles, and air the space when you open. Then place a nebuliser with neutraliser where the smell is strongest. If the smell appears after rain or on a single wall, it is a leak and has to be repaired.

A damp smell is not just any smell. Customers link it to neglect, even when the place is spotless. And it is one of the few that fragrance cannot fix, because there is a physical source behind it.

Where it comes from

  • A dry trap in a drain that is not used. It is the most common cause and the easiest to fix: pour a glass of water down every drain once a week.
  • No fresh air. Premises that close on Sunday and open on Monday after 36 hours shut up.
  • Absorbent textiles: curtains, carpet, upholstery, stored workwear.
  • Real leaks in a wall or ceiling. This does need building work and no product can cover it.

What you can fix without spending

  1. Water in every drain, including those in the cleaning cupboard.
  2. 15 minutes of cross-ventilation when you open, even if it is cold.
  3. Take damp textiles out of the premises, do not store them in a closed cupboard.
  4. Check the air-conditioning filter. A dirty filter smells musty and spreads it all over the premises.

These four steps clear up a good share of cases. The rest is where equipment comes in.

Quick diagnosis

If the smell… Likely cause What to do
Comes from a drain Dry trap Water down the drains weekly
Is strong at opening and fades during the day Poor ventilation Air when opening and neutralise continuously
Comes from the air conditioning Dirty filter Clean or replace the filters
Appears after rain Leak Repair it and tell the landlord

Neutraliser, not fragrance

For damp you use a neutraliser, which acts on the molecules responsible for the smell. Spray fragrance over it and for a while you smell both, then the damp comes back on its own.

At BENDIS it is the Aloe Vera neutraliser, formulated for damp, pets and tobacco. How it works is explained in odour neutralisation.

The unit goes where the smell is strongest, not at the entrance. If the problem is in the stockroom at the back, that is where it goes, even if nobody sees it. Schedule the unit to also run in the first hours of the morning, which is when the smell built up overnight is most noticeable.

How much output you need

For a stockroom or small basement, a compact unit running short cycles all day is enough. LUME covers 100 m² and FLOW 120 m². For a warehouse or a large basement you need a high-coverage unit such as ORBIT or ATMOS (600 m²), because the air volume is bigger than the floor area suggests.

You can compare coverage in the diffuser catalogue. Units are sold outright with delivery across Europe; in Spain and Portugal there is also a monthly scenting plan with equipment and neutraliser every month from €29.90 per month + VAT, with no minimum term.

When the problem is not yours

If the smell always appears after rain, or only on one wall, it is not about the air: it is a leak. Then you need to tell the landlord. Neutralising helps in the meantime, but it does not replace fixing the source.

Tell us where and when you notice it at info@bendis.es and we will tell you whether your case can be solved with a unit or needs something else first. We reply within 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Does a dehumidifier remove the damp smell?

It lowers the humidity in the air, which helps stop the smell coming back. But it does not remove the smell already in fabrics and walls. Ideally, combine it with ventilation and a neutraliser.

How long does it take for a damp smell to go?

If the source has been fixed, with ventilation and continuous neutralising you notice it within a few days. If the source is still active, it will come back.

Does the same method work for a home or a storage room?

Yes. The order is the same. You will find it adapted in damp smell in basements, storage rooms and closed-up houses.
