A damp smell is not just any smell: customers read it as neglect, even when the premises are spotless. And it is one of the few that fragrance will not fix, because there is a physical source behind it.
Where it comes from
- A dry trap in a drain that never gets used. This is the most common cause and the easiest to solve: pour a glass of water down every floor drain once a week.
- Poor air renewal. Premises that close on Sunday and reopen on Monday after 36 hours shut up tight.
- Absorbent textiles: curtains, carpet, upholstery, work clothing left in storage.
- Genuine leaks in a wall or ceiling. That one means building work, and no product will cover it.
What you can fix for free
- Water down every floor drain, including the one in the cleaning cupboard.
- Fifteen minutes of cross ventilation when you open, even in cold weather.
- Take damp textiles out of the premises rather than shutting them in a cupboard.
- Check the air conditioning filter. A dirty filter smells stale and spreads it through the whole space.
Those four points clear up a good share of cases. The rest is where equipment comes in.
Neutraliser, not fragrance
Damp calls for a neutralising product that acts on the molecules responsible for the smell. Add fragrance on top and for a while you smell both, then the damp comes back on its own.
The unit goes where the smell is strongest, not by the entrance. If the problem is in the back storeroom, that is where it belongs, even if nobody sees it.
How much power you need
For a storeroom or a small basement, a compact unit running in short cycles throughout the day is enough. For a warehouse or a large basement you need a wide coverage unit, because the air volume is far greater than the floor area suggests.

When the problem is not yours
If the smell always shows up after rain, or only along one wall, it is not an ambient issue: it is a leak. At that point the right move is to tell the landlord. Neutralising helps in the meantime, but it does not replace fixing the source.
