In a small shop, scent is one of the few branding tools that takes up no selling space. It costs you nothing in window or rail metres, and it is the first thing someone notices when they come in to browse.
The mistake of buying too much
Plenty of people with a 40 m² shop buy a 600 m² unit thinking it will "smell more". What actually happens is the opposite: it saturates the space, it bothers the staff who spend eight hours inside, and it burns through far more product. A properly sized unit running at its lowest setting smells better than an oversized one that has been throttled back.
For 40 m² with a standard ceiling, a unit rated up to 60 or 80 m² has plenty to spare. If the ceiling is high, or the shop is long and split into two areas, move up to the 100 or 120 m² range.
Where to put it
- Near the entrance, but not pointing at the door: the scent would drift straight out into the street.
- High up, above head height, so it falls evenly.
- Away from the air conditioning if it blows towards the exit.
- Never inside the fitting room. That space is small and enclosed and saturates in no time.
Choosing a scent
The decision here is not "which one do I like", it is "which one matches what I sell". A menswear shop and a cosmetics shop cannot smell the same. Pick a profile, stick with it and make it yours: the value is in the repetition, not in changing it every month.
Before you buy a large refill, try two or three profiles with 5 ml samples for a few days each.
Formats that suit small shops
If there is no free socket near the entrance, cordless models running on a rechargeable or standard batteries solve it with no visible cabling. If you rent the premises and cannot drill, plug-in wall models are the tidiest option. It is all in the diffuser catalogue.
Setting it up
Start at the lowest setting, schedule it to come on 20 minutes before you open and let it run through trading hours only. After a week, ask a regular customer. If they have said nothing and the shop does not smell stale, it is set correctly.
