How to neutralize the smell of mildew in an old house

Cómo neutralizar el olor a humedad en una casa antigua - BENDIS

The musty smell in an old house is one of the most difficult to eliminate. Not because it is more intense than other odors—but because it has multiple simultaneous sources that reinforce each other. Attacking only one of them doesn't work.

Why old houses smell musty

In houses older than 30-40 years, there are several structural factors that constantly generate humidity:

• Uninsulated walls: absorb moisture from the ground and exterior.
• Thermal bridges: areas where surface temperature drops and condenses moisture.
• Old pipes with micro-leaks: generate invisible moisture.
• Windows with condensation: house vapor deposits on glass and frames.
• Unventilated spaces: storage rooms, built-in wardrobes, areas under stairs.

The difference between musty smell and mold smell

The musty smell is produced by water on porous surfaces and materials. The mold smell is more intense and acrid—produced by the fungus once it is established.

If the smell is moldy, you must deal with the fungus before trying to eliminate the smell, because as long as the mold is active, the smell will continue to be produced regardless of what you do with the air.

The protocol for old houses

Identify and act on the sources
Check window seals, condensation areas, exterior walls, and unventilated spaces. Use a dehumidifier in problematic areas. Ventilate for at least 30 minutes daily even if it's cold—cold outside air has less absolute humidity than warm, humid indoor air.

Continuous air neutralization

Once humidity sources are controlled, ambient air neutralization is the final step. A nebulizer with a neutralizing refill acts on musty and mold odor molecules present in the air, continuously eliminating them.

In large houses or those with severe humidity problems, we recommend installing one or two BENDIS devices in the most affected areas. The device is free. From €39.99/month including VAT.
