Catalytic lamps: what they are, how they work and why BENDIS goes further

Lámparas catalíticas: qué son, cómo funcionan y por qué BENDIS va más allá - BENDIS

If you have landed here looking for a catalytic lamp, you are probably after the same thing thousands of people look for every month: a home that genuinely smells good. The catalytic lamp is an option with history and with real virtues. It also has limitations that are worth knowing about before you buy one.

What is a catalytic lamp?

It is a scenting device that works by catalytic combustion. You fill it with a liquid based on isopropyl alcohol and fragrance, light it with a flame and, once the flame is out, the catalytic stone stays hot and keeps burning the liquid in a controlled way, releasing the scent into the room.

The concept was developed in France at the end of the 19th century, originally to purify the air in hospitals. Over time they became decorative objects and some brands made them popular all over the world.

Their advantages

They act on odours instead of simply covering them up: catalytic combustion destroys part of the molecules responsible for the bad smell. They are decorative objects with carefully considered designs. And the choice of fragrances is enormous.

Their limitations

They need a naked flame, which makes them awkward in homes with children or pets and rules them out in most businesses on regulatory grounds. They are not automatic: you have to light them, wait and put them out by hand. The catalytic stone deteriorates with use and has to be replaced. Coverage is limited, so a single lamp is not enough for large spaces. And they are not designed for continuous use: the norm is not to go beyond thirty or sixty minutes per session.

In short: they work well for specific moments in a specific space. Not for keeping an ambience constant all day long.

The alternative: cold nebulization

The professional nebulizer works cold, with no flame and no heat. It turns the liquid into micro-particles of 1 to 10 microns that stay suspended in the air for hours and cover the volume of the space evenly. It is programmed by schedule and intensity and can run all day without anyone having to keep an eye on it.

What is more, because there is no combustion, the composition of the fragrance is not altered: what you smell is exactly what is in the liquid.

For the home, you will find the units and the refills in the shop. For businesses, on rental from €29.90/month + VAT per unit, with fragrance included and monthly replacement, with no minimum term and no upfront investment.
