Fatty acids and amines: the science behind pet odor

Ácidos grasos y aminas: la ciencia detrás del olor a mascota - BENDIS

If you have a dog and have tried to eliminate the smell from your home without success, you've probably been approaching the problem incorrectly. It's not a matter of cleaning—it's chemistry. And understanding chemistry is the first step to truly solving it.

The Odor Family of Pet Smell

The smell of dogs—and to a lesser extent, cats—primarily comes from two families of chemical compounds:

Short and medium-chain fatty acids
Fatty acids are organic compounds produced by the bacterial decomposition of an animal's skin secretions. Butyric acid, valeric acid, and caproic acid are primarily responsible for the characteristic dog odor. These are small molecules, volatile at room temperature, and extremely persistent on porous surfaces.

Biogenic amines
Amines are produced during protein decomposition—in an animal's saliva, sweat, and secretions. Putrescine, cadaverine, and spermidine are the main ones. They are responsible for the most intense and unpleasant component of dog odor.

Why these molecules are so difficult to eliminate

• They adhere to porous fibers: fabrics, carpets, wood, and walls absorb these molecules.
• They are fat-soluble: water doesn't wash them away. Conventional cleaning doesn't eliminate them.
• They regenerate: as long as the animal is in the space, production is continuous.
• Air fresheners don't act on them: they only add another smell on top.

The right chemical solution

The only way to eliminate these molecules is through a chemical reaction that destroys them—not just covers them up. Professional neutralizers contain oxidizing agents and specific enzymes that react with fatty acids and amines, breaking them down into odorless molecules.

At BENDIS, we have formulated a specific neutralizing refill for the pet odor family. It is distributed in microparticles of 1-10 microns using a professional nebulizer, reaching every corner of the space where these molecules are present. The results are measurable in hours, not days.
