How to neutralise urine odour in care homes

Short answer: urine odour in a care home is removed in two steps. First the source (pads, mattresses, floors and bedding, with enzymatic cleaning and daily ventilation), then the air, with a cold-air nebuliser loaded with Jasmine odour neutraliser in bathrooms, affected rooms and corridors. Diffusers from €72.99, or from €29.90 + VAT a month with the monthly plan in Spain and Portugal.

It is the number one problem in any home with incontinent residents, and it is not about cleaning more. Urine breaks down into ammonia and other compounds that settle in mattresses, curtains, tile grout and floor drains. Even when the staff do everything right, the smell comes back every day because the source is continuous. That is why an air freshener doesn't work: it adds perfume on top, and the mix smells worse than urine alone.

Why the Jasmine neutraliser

Of the three BENDIS neutralisers, Jasmine works best on urine, drains and rubbish. It acts on the odour molecules instead of covering them and leaves a very discreet floral background that doesn't read as perfume. If the same area also has faecal or dirty laundry odours, Cotton Fresh complements it well. Both load into any BENDIS nebuliser, just like a fragrance.

Each refill costs €29.99 (150 ml) or €34.99 (250 ml), VAT included. With the monthly scenting plan, each month's neutraliser is already included.

How to use it without bothering residents

  • Low intensity in every resident area, and minimum in bedrooms.
  • Time slots: after morning personal care, after meals and before visiting hours. At night, off or at minimum.
  • Out of reach and fixed to the wall if needed.
  • Safety data sheets available for your health and safety team. For residents with respiratory conditions, the care team decides.
  • It doesn't replace hygiene: the neutraliser works on the odour left in the air, not on the stain.

The step-by-step guide, including a cleaning protocol, is in how to remove urine smell in a care home.

How to start

No site visits: send us photos of the areas that smell and their size by WhatsApp or to info@bendis.es, or call +34 911 09 70 50. We suggest diffusers per area with a fixed price and can send 5 ml samples if you want to smell the neutraliser first. The diffusers arrive configured and plug in within 5 minutes.

Frequently asked questions about urine odour in care homes

Why does it still smell of urine even with daily cleaning?

Because the odour settles in mattresses, textiles, grout and drains, and in a home with incontinence the source renews every day. Cleaning removes the stain; the neutraliser deals with what stays in the air between cleans.

Which neutraliser is best for urine odour?

At BENDIS, the Jasmine neutraliser, formulated for urine, drains and rubbish. For faecal or dirty laundry odours, Cotton Fresh.

Can it be used in residents' rooms?

Yes, if management decides so and only in the rooms that need it, with a quiet diffuser such as the SENSE at minimum intensity and in time slots.

How much does it cost to neutralise odour in an assisted bathroom?

The PULSE costs €72.99 and a 150 ml refill €29.99 (VAT included). In Spain and Portugal, €29.90 + VAT a month with the monthly plan, neutraliser included.

Does the neutraliser leave a perfume smell?

It leaves a very soft background, floral with Jasmine and clean laundry with Cotton Fresh. The idea is for the area to smell of nothing, not of air freshener.

Do you have safety data sheets for the products?

Yes. We send the safety data sheet for each neutraliser and fragrance so your health and safety team can review it before you start.
