To scent a CrossFit box or martial arts gym you have to start with the equipment: mats, bags and gloves absorb sweat and release it for hours. First ventilation and cleaning of the equipment, then neutraliser in the training room, changing rooms and equipment area, and fragrance only at the entrance.
A CrossFit box and a contact sports gym have a different odour problem from a machine gym. Here the smell does not come only from people: it comes from the equipment. Mats, bags, gloves, ropes and crash pads absorb sweat every day and release it for hours.
The source is the equipment, not the air
That is why the order here is the reverse of other venues. Before thinking about fragrance, you have to tackle the equipment:
- Gloves and protective gear aired after every class, never closed up in a bag.
- Mats mopped with a product that does not leave its own smell, and fully dry before the next class.
- Bags ventilated, with washable covers where available.
- No damp equipment stored in closed cupboards.
- Mouthguards, wraps and personal ropes kept by each member, not in a shared drawer.
With that solved, the neutralising device does its job without strain. Without it, no device can compete with an active source.
Which neutraliser to use
The smell in a box is almost always sweat fermented in fabrics and foams. That is what the Cotton Fresh neutraliser is for, formulated for sweat, smoke and WC odours. If there is also damp (changing rooms without extraction, basements, poorly ventilated warehouses), Aloe Vera covers that front. You will find the full comparison in which odour neutraliser to choose for each type of odour.
The zone plan
| Zone | What to use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Entrance and reception | Fragrance | This is where members decide whether the place is well kept |
| Training room or mat area | Neutraliser in short cycles | Odour is generated throughout the class |
| Equipment area | Neutraliser | It is the real source |
| Changing rooms and showers | Neutraliser, never fragrance | Humidity and sweat at the same time |
| Stretching or mobility | Warm, soft fragrance | Cool-down area |
Output: measure the volume
A box is usually a warehouse with a high ceiling. A 250 m² room with a six-metre ceiling has much more air than a 400 m² room with a normal ceiling, so sizing by floor area falls short. As a quick reference: if the ceiling is over three metres, go up one level in the range.
- Reception or small changing room: BENDIS FLOW, up to 120 m², runs on batteries or USB-C.
- Medium rooms: ORBIT or ATMOS, up to 600 m².
- Large warehouses: HALO (800 m²), WAVE (875 m²) or NOVA (1,600 m²), or two devices spread out instead of pushing one.
If the venue has ducted air conditioning, the ATMOS and HALO can be connected to it to spread the diffusion through the vents. We explain it in how to connect a diffuser to the HVAC duct. You can compare coverage in the diffuser catalogue.
Schedules
Boxes work by classes, with very marked peaks. What works:
- Start 30 minutes before the first class.
- Higher intensity during the busiest time slots.
- Neutraliser in short, constant cycles in changing rooms and the equipment area throughout opening hours.
- Stop at closing.
Which fragrance profile to choose
Citrus and green scents hold up best in rooms with physical activity: they give a fresh feel without being sweet. Mint, lemon or green tea are safe bets. Very sweet profiles in a room full of people training quickly become heavy.
If you want the approach for a conventional gym, it is in scenting gyms and changing rooms.
Buy or monthly subscription
Many boxes prefer not to tie up money in equipment. With the scenting subscription you get the device and each month's fragrance or neutraliser from €29.90 + VAT, with no minimum term and 30 days' notice. If you tell us the square metres, ceiling height and number of changing rooms at info@bendis.es, we will plan the layout remotely.
Frequently asked questions
How many diffusers does a CrossFit box need?
It depends on the volume, not just the square metres. As a guide, one for reception, one or two for the training room depending on ceiling height, and one per changing room.
Does the neutraliser leave a smell on the mats?
It is not applied to the mats: it is diffused into the air. Even so, it is best to programme short cycles and place the device up high, away from the contact area.
Can I use fragrance in the changing rooms?
It is not recommended. Fragrance mixes with sweat and humidity and the result is usually worse. In changing rooms, always neutraliser.
